Food labelling
Where severe food allergy is concerned, many shoppers regard reading food labels as a life-saving exercise. With that in mind, certain key points need to be considered:
- Ingredient lists and allergen statements must be legible. Miniscule type and hard-to-read colour combinations should be avoided.
- Allergen advice boxes and ‘may contain’ statements should be situated below or adjacent to the ingredients list.
- Plain language is a must (the label should make it clear, for example, that casein is derived from milk).
- The introduction of new allergens to an existing product should be flagged up on the front of the packaging, for example with a flash saying: “New recipe.”
